Having the Right to Believe and to Believe in the Truth. The Convergence Argument in Discussions About Religion

Wojciech Selak

Abstract

The article addresses the problem of contemporary forms of the negation of faith and the growing phenomenon of religious indifference. Drawing on Church documents, it emphasizes the need for religious freedom and the obligation to seek truth. As a method of approaching this truth, the article proposes abductive reasoning and the use of the convergence argument, which consists in bringing together multiple independent premises. The text highlights analogous applications of this method in other areas of life and in empirical sciences, where decisions are based on the accumulation of probable data rather than on absolute proofs. The article underscores the interdisciplinary potential of the convergence argument and indicates directions for its further development.
