An outline of the pastoral ministry of the suffragan bishops of Wrocław in the light of state administration documents in the 1960s.

Sławomir Kowalski

Abstract

Based on preserved sources and the research of contemporary historians, we know that since the 1950s, the repressive policies of the state authorities toward the Church and believers intensified with each passing year. A particular climax of these actions occurred during the celebrations of the Millennium Jubilee. Thanks to the richly preserved archival sources of the state administration, it is possible to attempt a reconstruction of how the government’s actions toward the Church hierarchy in Poland were shaped and carried out. This study reveals only to a limited extent the nature of the policies directed at the closest collaborators of Cardinal Bolesław Kominek: Wincenty Urban, Paweł Latusek, and Andrzej Wronka – auxiliary bishops in Wrocław during the 1960s. It may be assumed that the examples of state administrative policies presented here will contribute to a more comprehensive picture of the actions undertaken.
