FEAR OF DEATH AND THE PLEASURE OF LIFE – EPICUREAN THERAPY FOR THE DEATH ANXIETY

Hanna Morkowska

Abstract

Death is an inseparable part of human existence, and therefore often a source of existential anxiety and fear. This issue was one of the fundamental topics of ancient philosophical reflection. Epicurus proposed a practical approach, while at the same time trying to theoretically justify the groundlessness of the fear of death. His philosophical therapy is built on atomistic foundations. It leads to happiness by using the healing properties of pleasure and the power of human reason. The Epicurean sage is able to free himself from false beliefs, including those regarding death. In this way, he frees his soul from the anxieties that torment it, so that he can truly enjoy life and its pleasures.
