Is Catholic Social Teaching Capable of Designing the Future? Reflections Based on Forecasts for the Development of Artificial Intelligence and the Popularity of Transhumanist Ideas

Krzysztof Adamski

Abstract

This text aims to reflect on the possibility of overcoming the crisis bothering Catholic social teaching, often perceived as a merely historical discipline that does not provide adequate responses to the current challenges facing humanity. One of the key factors driving the development of the modern world is technology, particularly information and communication technologies, stimulated by the advancement of artificial intelligence and the multi-faceted idea of transhumanism. The reflection contained in the text addresses both the diagnosis of contemporary issues put forward by the social sciences and provides examples of innovative inspirations in Catholic thought, including the legacy of P. Teilhard de Chardin and the philosophy of technology presented in the book Letters from Lake Como by R. Guardini.
