Ars artium educatio puerorum – Art above arts – education of the young generation. Part I: Anthropological foundations of education and educational institutions

Ignacy Dec

Abstract

Man needs education. The process of education is situated in the personal realm of human existence. St. Thomas Aquinas, in his commentary on Aristotle’s secondary analytics, left us a meaningful sentence indicating the spiritual life of man: “Genus humanum arte et ratione vivit” (The human kind lives with art and reason). In the process of education, a person should primarily discover the world of spiritual values, and then should be guided by them in their personal and social life. The issue of education is an important part of the teaching of the Church, especially the ecumenical councils and popes.
