THE SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXT OF CONTEMPORARY EVANGELIZATION IN POLAND

Abstract

Evangelization, in a strict sense, means conveying the Christian message to non-Christians. However, in a broader sense, it means proclaiming the person, teachings, and work of Jesus Christ to all people, including those who are baptized and profess to be part of the Church. This presentation focuses on the latter, broader meaning of evangelization. Evangelization can be done using various methods and means, but it always needs to take into account the social and cultural context of the audience. In the past, the development of individuals was largely influenced by the narrow circles of local culture. Thanks to the advancement of electronic media, especially radio, television, the Internet, and more recently, social media, certain cultural trends can easily gain a global reach. The goal of this article is to present the roots of the contemporary cultural situation in Western societies. The analysis will then focus on the phenomenon of the decline of faith in a personal God, revolutionary changes in anthropology that have led to a crisis in married and family life. The final part of this presentation will include pastoral insights for the Church in Poland as a subject and organizer of contemporary evangelization.
